As much as we at Fortis would like to assert otherwise, no one is immune to procrastination. Even the most motivated and focused people encounter it from time to time. As long as you have the right system in place to combat it, however, you can effectively conquer it. We’d like to take this opportunity to share our favorite productivity hack, and invite you to experiment with it as well.
According to our team members at Fortis, beating procrastination is a matter of finding the right motivation and ensuring that it’s as easy as possible to initiate your work. To begin the exercise, commit to taking five or 10 minutes every day to train yourself. Hold yourself accountable by betting someone $100 that you’ll follow through with this intention.
Next, set a reminder for the moment you open your computer in the morning. A big, bright Post-It note should do the trick. Before you do anything else, complete the brief exercise. Simply select a task you’ve been neglecting and work on it for those five to 10 minutes. That’s all there is to it.
We do encourage you to be mindful of any urges to do something you would enjoy more. Be aware of these temptations, experience them, and let them pass. Whatever you do, don’t give in during the training sessions.
As we at Fortis have learned, this productivity hack is most beneficial if you continue it for a week, followed by incremental increases in time. Move to sessions lasting 10 or 15 minutes, and stick with it for two weeks. Then advance to 20 minutes. Before you know it, you’ll have won the war against procrastination.
